Raine’s eye-catching cards in aid of Cancer Research Wales

December 17th, 2020

A talented artist at Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools has made beautiful Christmas cards to raise money for Cancer Research Wales.

Raine, a Year 13 boarder, created lovely designs, with the cards sold to staff and students at Monmouth School for Girls.

Eighteen-year-old Raine is studying Art, Psychology and Economics at A level and intends to study for a degree in Art at university.

The money raised from her project is being donated to the Cancer Research Wales fund of Tom, a caring, kind and considerate a pupil at Monmouth School for Boys.

Tom’s sisters, Holly, 14 and Emily, 12, are both pupils at Monmouth School for Girls and have been at the forefront of a wonderful community campaign, which has raised more than £147,000 to date, in his memory.

The first recipient of Tom’s Cancer Research Wales PhD Studentship for Acute Myeloid Leukaemia Research is due to start at the Cardiff University School of Medicine, based at the University Hospital of Wales, in January.

Each three-year PhD post requires £100,000 funding and Tom’s family and friends are now raising money to fund a second researcher.

Despite the ongoing covid-19 pandemic this year, Tom’s family has continued to raise awareness for his fund, selling cards and calendars from their social media accounts.

The calendars contain a host of outstanding photographs, which have been chosen from over 700 entries; all taken by students and staff of Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools with the winners being selected by Tom’s grandfather.

Matt Peake, Head of Art at Monmouth School for Boys, supported the calendar competition.

The 2021 calendars are still available for a minimum donation of £5 each, and can be ordered by e-mailing: calendar@swimfortom.uk
