Wellbeing

We understand how crucial it is to provide our day and boarding students with exceptional pastoral care and support.

We strive to ensure that every pupil at Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools is cared for, feels safe and supported, and is inspired by their experience with us.

We aim to be a centre of excellence for Wellbeing for all members of our community, with a culture of mutual support and kindness for all.

Our schools’ impressive Health and Wellbeing Centres are run by highly qualified and knowledgeable staff who are experts in their field.

Our schools’ Counselling Service is in addition to the already well-established provision for pastoral care, guidance, and support for pupils in the schools.

Our experienced and professional counsellors are accredited members of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and are qualified in offering counselling support to children, young people and adults.

Counselling support can help when a pupil is struggling emotionally or feeling overwhelmed by their feelings.  The counsellors are here to support pupils through any difficulties they are facing, whether it be a current situation or past experience, inside or outside of school.  The person centred, non-judgemental and non-directive counselling helps pupils to spend time processing their feelings in a safe and supported space, and to find a way forward that is right for them.   The counselling rooms are located in the Health and Wellbeing Centre (HWBC), offering a quiet and reflective space away from busy school life.  Pupils can access the School Counsellors through asking a teacher, tutor, house parent or any member of the HWBC staff.  They are also able to email the counsellors directly, should they not wish for anyone else to know that they are seeking support.

All that is shared by the pupils will be treated in confidence – if the counsellor is concerned for the pupil’s safety or that of others then she abides by the BACP Code of Ethics which would mean the sharing of relevant information in the appropriate way to ensure that all children are safeguarded.

Your child’s wellbeing is of the utmost importance to us and we do everything we can to ensure that our pupils are healthy and happy at school.

Our experienced medical team is on standby 24 hours a day so that students have access to medical care whenever they need it.

Our schools’ nursing team is fully qualified and experienced in caring for boys and girls with minor illnesses, mental health concerns, sports injuries and chronic conditions including asthma, epilepsy and diabetes.

The School Doctor, based in a nearby surgery, is available for consultations during Open Surgeries and by appointment.

We deliver a carefully structured, age-appropriate, engaging, relevant and exciting PSHE (Personal, Social, Health, and Economic) programme as part of the curriculum.

With real-life issues at the heart of our comprehensive framework, our students discuss a wide range of important topics, including positive relationships, mental health and wellbeing, gender identity, the consequences of alcohol and drugs, interest rates, saving and mortgages.

Backed up by expert speakers and workshops, we aim to provide our students with the information and support they need to make informed decisions at the right stages of their personal development.

Our Key Stage 3 and 4 programmes are in line with the Welsh Government’s Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE) guidance.

In the Sixth Form, it is a pupil-led programme which encourages all students to respect the difference and diversity in people, be open-minded and make healthy, safe lifestyle choices in a supported environment.

In today’s rapidly changing society, we recognise that our children cannot shy away from the issues and challenges that are important to them and we have a duty of care to ensure that they are supported fully.

Having received valuable input from our students, we believe our progressive PSHE programme can empower them and help them to build the necessary resilience and confidence to become the best version of themselves.
