Five-medal haul for in-form Monmouth swimmers

Monmouth swimmers have bagged five medals in a Welsh national gala at Cardiff International Pool.

The senior pupils from Monmouth School for Girls clinched three silver and two bronze medals in yesterday’s Secondary Schools National Swimming Gala.

Rachel had a memorable day, winning two silver medals and a bronze.

It was an excellent showing from the Monmouth girls, under the guidance of coach Kate Jarvis, who had qualified for the national finals at the regional heats in Pontypool in October.

The Year 9-10 4x50m relay team of Rachel, Lucy, Laura, and Hattie were in excellent form, smashing their qualification times to win silver medals in both the freestyle and medley relay events.

The Year 7-8 4x50m relay team of Erlina, Evie, Eleanor, and Hope also impressed and smashed their qualification times, snapping up a silver medal in the team freestyle relay.

Erlina also shone as an individual competitor, racing to a bronze medal in the 100m freestyle in the Year 8 girls’ event, while Rachel won a bronze in the 100m freestyle in the Year 9 section.

Eva qualified for the finals of the 100m freestyle and 100m butterfly, smashing her personal best times and achieving two top-seven finishes, while Lucy raced in her 100m heat in the 100m backstroke.

The Year 9-10 4x50m relay team of Lucy, Hattie, Laura, and Rachel clinched two silver medals.
