Dictionary Skills workshops prove a huge success

November 26, 2019

Improving Dictionary Skills was the theme as Monmouth School for Girls held an EAL (English as an Additional Language) Day for all international students.

Organised by the school’s Head of EAL, Mrs Caroline Bown, the senior school was pleased to host the visit of Mrs Maree Airlie, a lexicographer from HarperCollins Dictionaries.

Mrs Airlie organised a series of Dictionary Skills workshops and competitions geared to different age ranges.

It was an awareness-raising session to promote the use of dictionaries, whether bilingual or monolingual, as vital language learning tools.

Students rose to their respective challenges, becoming ‘polyglots’ in some instances, managing exercises in Irish and Italian as well as, of course, English.

Winners of various competitions were presented with Harper Collins dictionaries and sweet treats.

In addition, members of Years 11, 12 and 13 had the opportunity to learn about Life as an International Student at a UK university from overseas student ambassadors Harsh Gupta and Lily Qi and an Admissions officer, Siobhan Ralfe, all from the University of Bath.
