Nine students at Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools have shone in a national competition organised by the Royal Society of Chemistry.
Carys, from Year 13, achieved a gold award in the 54th annual Chemistry Olympiad – among only 8.9% of the 8,668 UK-wide entries to receive the highest grade.
Year 13 trio Toby, Ben and Jodie were joined by Year 12 students Rhys and Marco in securing silver awards.
Year 12 students Jason, Matei and Sophia also shone, receiving bronze awards.
All students who took part are studying A level Chemistry based at Monmouth School for Girls where Miss Diana Crichton, Head of Chemistry, was delighted with their achievements.
“Nine of our chemists gave up two hours of their Friday night to participate in this year’s Chemistry Olympiad,” said Miss Crichton.
“The Olympiad always has a huge entry across the UK despite the degree of difficulty with content well beyond the A level syllabus.
“This year there were 8,668 entries across the UK. Only 8.9% were awarded gold, 22.7% silver and 32.4% bronze with the final 36% receiving participation certificates.
“I am so proud of our chemists and know they will go from strength to strength.; well done to each of them.”
