Purple ribbons were seen across the school on Friday 8th March, as pupils showed their support for International Women’s Day.
Led by the Monmouth School for Girls Women’s Forum, pupils Nell and Penny sold purple ribbons all week to students in the Atrium, to raise awareness of the global day – which celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.
Penny explained: “We are selling purple ribbons because purple signifies the colour the suffragettes wore. It’s going really well – the school is showing a lot of support for International Women’s Day.”
Head of Drama, Mrs Knight added: “This year’s Women’s Day theme is Balance for Better, which marks a call to action for accelerating gender balance. The colour purple will be used to signify the progress made by the suffragettes and the suffragists and the hope for a future of gender equality.”
Alongside the purple ribbons, Penny and Nell also sold pin badges and bracelet bands. All proceeds raised during the event will be donated to Plan International, to support the education of Selina, a Year 10 student in Kenya.
