Monmouth School for Boys recorded impressive victories against Millfield and the hosts as they finished runners-up in a sevens rugby tournament in Dorset.

The under-15 team impressed at the Sherborne School Rugby Sevens with strong carries, deft offloads and bone-crunching tackles.

Despite disruptions to training caused by the recent flooding, the Monmouth boys performed admirably, winning three matches before narrowly losing the final to Eton.

Monmouth chalked up fine victories over Millfield (32-17) and Kingswood (38-7) before a nail-biting win over the hosts, Sherborne, 19-14.

The final was a tight contest and Monmouth put up a brave fight before slipping to a 7-5 defeat to Eton in difficult weather conditions.

“The boys have worked hard over the course of this term to adapt their rugby skillsets from the 15s game to 7s,” said team coach, Mr Callum Stonier.

“Their performance was a clear indication that there are good things to come and the boys conducted themselves with humility and dignity.”

Mr Stonier added: “Without the commitment of our parents, our boys would not be able to perform to the level they do.”
