Rugby legend inspires boys to home tournament triumph

March 10, 2022

Monmouth School for Boys carried off the top prize in their hotly-contested Under-12 Rugby 7s Tournament.
Twenty schools, including Monmouth, played fast-flowing and skilful rugby in blustery conditions.
It was wonderful to welcome back former school 1st XV rugby coach, Housemaster and teacher, John Bevan, the legendary Wales and British and Irish Lions rugby union star.
John Bevan, who also won six Rugby League caps for Great Britain and enjoyed a glittering 13-year spell at Warrington, put on his boots and refereed matches in yesterday’s tournament.
Monmouth won the Cup on home soil, by virtue of scoring the first try, after drawing 2-2 with Ysgol Gyfun Rhydywaun in the final.
Headmaster, Mr Simon Dorman, presented the Cup to the home under-12s captain, Zeb.
Congratulations to Solihull School for winning the Bowl after victory against Marling School in the final; and to Caerleon Comprehensive School for clinching the Plate after defeating Ysgol Glantaf in the final.
Organiser, Mr Jon Despontin, the Master in Charge of Rugby at Monmouth School for Boys, thanked all the schools who took part and those who helped out and supported the hugely-successful event.
