Mini heroes present children’s charities with hard-earned donations

May 21st, 2015

Spiderman, a Ghostbuster, Elsa from Frozen and Buzz Lightyear were among heroic fundraisers who presented a year’s worth of donations to two vital children’s charities on Wednesday.

Pupils at Agincourt School and Nursery in Monmouth transformed into their favourite heroes for a special assembly with guests from Tŷ Hafan children’s hospice and Noah’s Ark, the only charity exclusively fundraising for the Children’s Hospital for Wales.

After countless cake sales, a Spring Ball, a quiz and curry night, mufti days and other events organised by Friends of Agincourt, cheques for £2,650 were given to each of the charities.

A further £7,950 was raised for the school, which will be ploughed back into new facilities and equipment for the pupils.

Julie Hayward, a trustee of Noah’s Ark, said: “It’s really nice when you see children raising money for children – especially for local charities.

“It’s such hard work raising money, and they’ve done an amazing job.”

Phase One of the very first Children’s Hospital for Wales, based in Cardiff, has been opened after 10 years of planning.

Noah’s Ark has raised many millions of pounds through public support.

During the assembly, Julie talked to the pupils about how the money they raised will help the hospital, and explained what happens there.

She added: “I hope that the children have learnt that if they ever have to go to hospital it’s not frightening.

“That’s why I talked about the wards and told them they will be able to get better in an environment where their parents can stay with them.

“A play therapist costs half a million pounds a year, and they’re so important because they sit down with the children and explain exactly what’s happening to them.

“We fund lots of things like that which the NHS doesn’t cover.”

Natalie Whyatt, business and community fundraiser for Tŷ Hafan, also talked to the children about the work the hospice does.
