An Old Monmothian is continuing to flourish among world-class rowers in the United States.

Iwan Hadfield was a key part of the University of California, Berkeley, 1st Varsity Eight, who triumphed in the Pac12 Championships in Oregon last weekend.

The former Monmouth School for Boys’ student, a sports scholar, rowed in the stroke seat as Cal defeated arch-rivals Washington University by clear water.

Iwan, who left Monmouth in the summer of 2019, after his A levels, is part of the top-ranked Cal rowing team in the USA.

Cal have not lost a race in the USA for two seasons and the crew will be hoping to defend their title at the upcoming United States Championships in two weeks.

Iwan will then be returning to the UK to trial for the Great Britain Under-23 team.

In 2021, Iwan clinched a bronze medal for Great Britain at the Under-23 World Rowing Championships in the Czech Republic.

He had previously won a bronze for GB at the 2019 World Junior Championships in Tokyo.

Iwan learnt to row with Cardiff and Vale Schools Rowing Academy, before moving to Monmouth School for Boys on a rowing scholarship in the Sixth Form.

Whilst at Monmouth, Iwan gained selection for Wales at the Home International Regattas of 2017 and 2018.

He represented Great Britain for the first time at the 2019 Munich Junior Regatta in Germany.
