Swimming: Monmouth vs Clifton College -Full Report

On Thursday, following a run of consecutive wins, the Monmouth Boys School swimming team joined forces with HMSG once again, this time to face new opponents, Clifton College. Our aim was simple: win and we would maintain a 100% record – a feat which began in October of last year.

The gala commenced with the Individual Medleys, and despite the strong efforts from Will and Joshua, Monmouth were only able to obtain two 1st place finishes out of a possible eight. In addition came the 50m Backstroke – another event in which Clifton’s senior members dominated. However, as the event approached halfway, the team was able to get off the mark strongly. The 50m Frontcrawl event saw 1st place finishes for Robbie and Dominic, while Henry and Charlie were also successful in their respective 50m Breastroke races. By now, Monmouth were cruising their way to another victory, as the gala approached the final event in the form of the 4x100m relay – an event which never disappoints in terms of close finishes. The Monmouth junior quartet – including Mason, who must be given credit for moving up year – missed out on victory by a very small fraction of a second, but the seniors were able to bulldoze their way past the Clifton opposition, with the squad finishing by almost an entire length.

Ultimately, Monmouth finished the gala with 145 points to Clifton’s 75 – a fantastic way to round off a successful Lent term for the school swimming team. We now look forward to a well-earned Easter holiday break, after which the team will prepare to uphold the formidable unbeaten run that all members have worked so hard for. Well done to all the boys who participated.
