Monmouth student Iwan has been picked to represent Great Britain at the 2019 World Rowing Junior Championships in Japan.

The Monmouth School for Boys’ rower has been rewarded for his determination and commitment since joining the Sixth Form as a rowing scholar two years ago.

The 18-year-old will be rowing in the stroke seat of the Great Britain VIII at the state-of-the-art venue for the 2020 Olympic venue.

It is a wonderful fillip for the school rowing club, particularly in its 150th anniversary year, and all eyes will be on Iwan at the championships in Tokyo from 7th to 11th August.

“Iwan’s selection has been has been the culmination of an extraordinary two years since Iwan joined us as a rowing scholar,” said Mr John Griffiths, Master in Charge of Rowing at Monmouth School for Boys.

“Iwan’s determination and commitment to succeed in all aspects of his life in Monmouth School for Boys has been exemplary and he has been a driving force in the school 1st VIII’s progress. “

Last year, Iwan kept Monmouth firmly in the rowing spotlight after impressing during a GB Rowing Team Junior Potential Camp in Nottingham.

Iwan was among 30 boys from across the country who took part in activities focused on technique, physiology, psychology and other attributes needed to succeed at the top level in rowing.

He then made his Great Britain rowing debut with a memorable two-medal haul at the Munich Junior Regatta.

Iwan had an ‘incredible experience’, winning silver and bronze medals on his GB debut at the prestigious meeting in Germany

Mr Griffiths added: “Getting full representation at the World Junior Championships is a huge step up following Iwan’s GB vest at Munich Junior regatta earlier this year.

“We wish Iwan and his GB crew the very best of luck.”

Iwan will be joined in the stern of the GB VIII by his pairs’ partner Connor Brown from Abingdon School with whom he has trained and trialled through the gruelling trials process this year.
