Huge win for Monmouth 1st XI against St Paul’s – on to the finals

March 4, 2024

Last Wednesday, Monmouth first team welcomed St Paul’s London for the semi-final of the ISFA knockout competition.

With a large supporting crowd of pupils, Old Monmothians and staff, the squad were confident and excited ahead of the game. Monmouth started superbly and minutes after kick off, Jake T found Noah R down the line, who put in an enticing cross towards Ryan S, causing the St Paul’s centre half to turn it into his own net.

Despite more Monmouth pressure, St Paul’s were able to establish their game plan but couldn’t break through the strong back three of Zac W, Lewys E and Harry B. However, a chance at the end of the half saw them level it to 1-1.

The boys remained positive and started the second half firmly. Iestyn J, Tommy Cand Logan W dominated the midfield whilst protecting the back line. Harry B was able to pick the ball up on the flank, and played a long ball to Noah R, who headed it past the keeper putting Monmouth in the lead.

This resulted in a massive defensive shift from the team to see out the game. Alfie B pulled out several fantastic saves and the back line held their shape fantastically.

When the final whistle blew, the whole team, fans and staff were all jubilant. A passionate performance from Monmouth and a huge win. Monmouth now await the final away in Beaconsfield against Bancroft’s school on Wednesday the 13th of March.
