Grange Chess English Primary Schools’ Chess Association Championships 2014

March 3, 2014

This prestigious team event now attracts hundreds of entries from across the country. The Grange U9s A & B, and U11 A & B were four of 24 teams taking part in the first round Zonal in Chepstow in March. In the U9s our A team of Cameron, William, Finlay, Dylan, Thomas & Christopher competed with gusto against schools from across South Wales & the West Country. Over five rounds the boys scored 14 points out of a maximum of 25, placing The Grange 3rd on the day & each boy taking home a bronze medal. The team now proceeds to the National Semi-Final to be held in Bristol in May.

Meanwhile the B team, captained by Barney & aided & abetted by Harry, also had a great competition: the team was just ½ a point short of qualifying. Top scorers were Arthur, Toby & Will, & Benjamin also shone.

The U11s section was even better: the Grange B team, captained by Will & featuring Philip, Ben, Che, Mattias & Samuel were just outside the medals in 4th place but still qualified for the Semi-Final. The A team was in imperious form & dominated the competition, scoring 22.5 out of 25 to secure 1st place & gold medals by a country mile. Captain was Michael, & the batting order was Max, Woody, George, Ed & Jack.

All boys were without doubt a credit to the school. Parents – supportive as ever – acted as Team Managers during the day. Ben won the award for most impressive lunchbox as usual.

Coach Mr.Thomas said today: “This junior squad really is going from strength to strength. To get three teams through to the national semi-finals is terrific. In the summer term we will be targeting the Welsh Schools’ Championships that will take place in Cardiff.”
