African Drumming at the Grange

April 3, 2014

The Grange were treated to a feast of African music from master musicians, Vieux Bakayoko & Simon McCarthy.

Vieux is a master drummer of mixed Malian and Guinean heritage who grew up in Senegal and has great knowledge of the music that spreads across the whole West African region. Simon is a long time player and teacher of West African djembe music.

Simon and Vieux coached Prep IV boys in a drumming workshop and fun was had by all involved.  They also worked with The Grange Choir on African Songs, which featured on the Glantaf Stage at The Wales Millennium Centre as part of the 400th anniversary of Monmouth School.

This was an excellent opportunity for the boys to discover, through performance, the richness and vitality of African music from two expert musicians.
