Students scale new heights to win climbing titlesJanuary 31st, 2018
Monmouth students scaled new heights at the annual Wales Cadet Indoor Climbing Championships in Cardiff.
Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools’ Combined Cadet Force won the overall event and clinched three other titles at Boulders Climbing Centre on Saturday 27th January.
Monmouth won the team event, speed climbing team title and Charlie carried off the individual Junior Boys’ crown.
Climbing is among four new sports set to make Olympic debuts at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Monmouth School for Boys’ Bob, Harry, Yaroslav, and Georgina formed the senior team. William, Charlie, Finlay and Edward made up the junior team.
With consistent and determined performances by all team members, Monmouth enjoyed their most successful year ever by winning the competition outright. They also became team champions and, led by the fastest competitor, Edward, won the speed climbing team title.
The focused and determined Charlie showed good technique to secure a place in the junior finals.
Using his strength, Charlie then scaled a technically challenging wall to win the junior title which narrowly evaded him 12 months ago.
Harry also impressed, producing a gritty performance to become runner-up in the senior competition.
Monmouth School for Girls’ Georgina achieved a creditable third spot in the female section.
Mr Matt Peake, a teacher at Monmouth School for Boys, said: “The students achieved an amazing haul of trophies and medals which was remarkable because some of them had only had two previous sessions on a climbing wall.”
