Sports News: Latest Football Results

March 7, 2016

Every week we will endeavour to keep you up to date with all of the sporting action at Monmouth School, whether it be in the gym, on the fields in the river or at the pool. The following is the football report for last week from the captain of the 1st XI:

Football Best Season Ever 2015

Last week produced some fantastic results for all the school football teams:

1st XI

In the first team’s match against Clifton College on Thursday, a good save from Harry stopped an early free kick, but a Clifton striker reached the second ball and tapped it in, putting them 1-0 up. However we were on the front foot for the rest of the game, and Asanji scored a fantastic header from a free kick. With total dominance of possession and 9 shots on target in the second half, Monmouth were very unfortunate to come away with a 1-1 draw.

On Saturday, the first team faced The Old Monmothians in a notoriously challenging fixture. A quiet and even first half left us just 1-0 up at half time, however the opposition tired in the second half and 2 goals from Joe resulted in a 5-0 victory to conclude a very busy but successful week of fixtures.

Our next fixture will be against King’s Worcester this Wednesday.

2nd XI

In their game against Clifton, the second team had a closely contested first half, but eventually Monmouth were able to string together a series passes before delivering a ball into the box for Jeff to finish with a fantastic header, giving them a much deserved lead. They were unable to capitalize on several goal scoring opportunities in the second half, but remained dominant, preventing Clifton from getting a shot on goal until two minutes from the end. Monmouth conceded a cheap free kick, and a long ball over the top, mixed with some poor communication led to an unfortunate own goal by Max, his second of the season, and a disappointing 1-1 draw.

The Second team’s Saturday fixture against Hereford Cathedral School resulted in a 4-0 victory and all round dominance over their opponents.

3rd XI

The 3rd eleven also faced Clifton College last Thursday, and their positive attacking play led them to a 2-0 victory.

U16 XI

The under 16’s had 2 matches last week, the first being a convincing 5-2 win against Clifton College. However, this weekend they faced Newport County, a strong regional team, and despite goals from Will and Laurie, they narrowly lost 3-2 in a close game.

U15 XI

The Under 15 B’s faced tough opposition this weekend against Hereford Cathedral’s A team. However, the strength in depth of the under 15-age group was evident in their 5-1 victory. Unfortunately for the A team, their match against Bristol Grammar School was cancelled this weekend, however they beat Rougemont 7-0 in their midweek fixture.

U14 XI

The under 14 A team played two matches, winning both of them comfortably. A 4-1 win against Rougemont gave them great confidence leading into Saturday’s fixture against Hereford Cathedral School, where they secured a 9-1 victory. Not to be out done and in response to a defeat the previous week, The Under 14 B’s won by the greatest margin of the season with a monumental 13-2 win, also against Hereford Cathedral School.
