Sports News: 1st XI remain unbeaten!

February 8, 2016

Every week we will endeavour to keep you up to date with all of the sporting action at Monmouth School, whether it be in the gym, on the fields in the river or at the pool. The following is the football report for last week from the captain of the 1st XI:

Football Best Season Ever 2015

Unfortunately, due to storm Imogen’s arrival on our shores there were no fixtures this weekend. However on Thursday the Under 16s, the 2nd XI and the 1st XI traveled away to Bristol Grammar School. With heavy fog and boggy surfaces all three sides found it difficult to play their usual free-flowing football.

1st XI

The 1st XI maintained their unbeaten record with a 2-2 draw. Both Ellery and Alex scored again, proving their consistency. A soft penalty allowed BGS to go ahead 2-1, but our equaliser came with 10 minutes to play, and a frantic 10 minutes in the fog ensued! Neither side managed to pinch a winning goal and the game finished 2-2, which was a fair result.

Weather permitting we could have a mid-week 1st XI fixture against Gwent, where we hope to return to our winning ways.

2nd XI

The 2nd XI had a very convincing win, 7-3, and were very pleased with their performance. Jeffrey had another excellent game as striker, scoring a hat-trick which has furthered his cause for 1st XI selection.

U16 XI

The Under 16s had a well fought match and were unlucky to suffer a 4-3 loss. Laurie had put Monmouth on the front foot with two goals, but BGS fought back well to take the win in the last few minutes of the game.
