You’re hired! Students quiz Lord Alan Sugar

November 23, 2018

Five young entrepreneurs made their television debuts as they interviewed two winners of The Apprentice and picked the brains of business magnate Lord Alan Sugar.

Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools’ students Adam, Dan, Harry, Josephine and Izzy were given unique access at the Introbiz Expo in Cardiff yesterday (Thursday 22nd November).

The business-savvy students from Monmouth School for Boys and Monmouth School for Girls had a private audience with Alana Spencer, winner of The Apprentice in 2016, and Mark Wright, who triumphed in the popular BBC show in 2014.

As part of the BBC Young Reporters’ scheme, the students’ memorable day included a VIP lunch and an hour’s question-and-answer session with Lord Sugar.

During the session, Adam asked Lord Sugar, who pulls no punches on the subject of Brexit, whether it was a good time for young people to start their own businesses.

A BBC Wales crew also visited the school to speak to the five students on camera about their MySlides project which won three awards in the Young Enterprise initiative last term.

Adam, Dan, Harry, Josephine and Izzy were part of the schools’ successful team which won the Welsh Young Enterprise Company of the Year, Best Company Report, and took the Digital Award for the most effective use of information technology.

The students gained acclaim after printing eye-catching personalised logos, patterns and pictures on to slider shoes.

The television feature was aired on BBC Wales Today last night.

Design and Technology teacher, Mr Nick Goodson, who mentored the group and accompanied them to Cardiff, said: “The students were invited to take part in Introbiz Expo by the BBC and the whole day was an excellent experience for all involved.

“It was wonderful to watch our students take centre stage in the television feature and the team from the BBC were impressed with their professionalism, calm confidence and eloquence.”
