Wales athlete Alaw speeds to silver medal

July 23, 2019

A Monmouth student has won a silver medal for Wales at a fiercely-fought athletics fixture in Swansea.

Alaw ran superbly in the 4x300m relay, helping Welsh Schools’ Under-17s to a second spot in the SIAB (Schools International Athletic Board) event.

The meeting involved the leading athletes from schools in Wales, England, Scotland and Ireland.

Having bagged silver at the Welsh Schools Track & Field Championships in Cardiff, the Monmouth School for Girls’ pupil looked on course for another impressive finish in the Middle Girls’ 300m.

Alaw, 16, was moving smoothly when fortune suddenly deserted her and she took a heavy tumble half-way through the race.

Despite the obvious disappointment, Alaw showed plenty of spirit and courage to get back on her feet.

Alaw finished the race much to the delight of the crowd and her team-mates.

The fixture was another wonderful experience for Alaw, who is growing in confidence and maturity at every competition.
