Two new A level subjects for Sixth Formers from September

January 28, 2022

Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools will be offering two new A level courses from September.
Photography and Digital Technology are exciting new A level options being introduced in the co-educational Monmouth Schools Sixth Form.
Currently, the Sixth Form’s carefully created curriculum offers 26 A level subjects.
With the introduction of Photography and Digital Technology, the options available will rise to 28 A level subjects for the academic year 2022/23.
Principal, Mr James Murphy-O’Connor, said: “We launched our co-ed Sixth Form four years ago to provide the best possible preparation for university and adult life.
“We are very proud of how this continues to develop under the superb leadership of Mrs Georgina Peace and her team.
“This September we will be augmenting our existing 26 A level subjects with two new options – Photography and Digital Technology – that will run if there is a suitable level of interest.
“Complementing this, our exciting enrichment programme adds a breadth of experience as we look to develop holistically the whole student through courses such as Combined Cadet Force (CCF), Young Enterprise, cooking on a budget, First Aid and climbing, among others.”
The schools have appointed Mr Gerry Stentiford as Head of Extra-Curricular to lead on an ambitious programme of demanding, formative and rewarding trips here in the Wye Valley and abroad to provide the chance for our students to travel to developing countries and work within communities.
Whilst living in New Zealand, Mr Stentiford, who is the current Head of Geography at Monmouth School for Boys, trained as an outdoor leader at the Sir Edmund Hilary Outdoor Pursuits Centre.
As a Mountain Leader, he has led a range of school and personal trips within the UK and further afield.
Mr Murphy-O’Connor added: “We run inspiring intellectual lectures and cultural societies – these are led by both our own experts and via invitations to top academics to visit and stimulate further thought and research through inspiring talks.
“We are proud of our Oxbridge and Russell Group successes and of the very high numbers of our students who gain their first or insurance choices for university.
“Our MSI (Monmouth Science Initiative) and MMI (Multiple Mini Interviews) programmes both provide expert experience of university scientific experiments and preparation for veterinary science, medicine and dentistry.
“We are most fortunate to have strong and supportive connections with university admissions through our governing board and the Haberdashers’ Company.
“Our Co-Curricular programme allows our Sixth Formers to represent and lead our schools at the highest level in Drama, Music and Sport.”
He concluded: “We have made significant investment in our staffing, facilities and resources across our co-curricular programmes this year as we emerge from COVID, and we are excited about the extended opportunities ahead for our Sixth Formers.”
