First-half goals from Hugo, Henry and Cian led Monmouth School for Boys to an impressive 3-1 home win against Millfield School Development XI.
The hosts started Saturday’s match like a steam train and roared into a 3-0 lead after just 30 minutes, on the 3G surface at Monmouth Schools Sports Club.
Master in Charge of Football, Mr Mark Tamplin, said: “Our first half of football was exceptional as the boys produced their finest period of football so far this season, with fast-paced passing that created lots of opportunities.”
Henry got the ball rolling for unbeaten Monmouth, tapping into an empty net after rounding the Millfield goalkeeper to put the hosts ahead.
Monmouth doubled their advantage soon afterwards when a thunderous close-range volley from Henry almost broke the net after a skilful run by the captain, William, and a long throw into the box from Cian.
Monmouth’s spirits were soaring and Cian increased the home side’s advantage further 10 minutes later, finishing off a superb run with a pin-point strike into the bottom corner.
Monmouth controlled the second half but Millfield, to their credit, held firm and had the final word in the closing minutes when they scored a consolation goal from the penalty spot.
There were notable performances from Luke and Tom in the centre of the pitch, both controlling the tempo of the game. Cian proved difficult to mark, with his pace and strength causing issues for the visitors.
Monmouth’s 1st XI will be hoping to maintain their excellent form when they host Newport County Under-16 Academy at home on Wednesday (9th March), kick-off, 7.30pm.
Meanwhile, Monmouth’s second team drew 1-1 at home to Millfield, while the third team lost 6-3 in an action-packed away game, and the unbeaten under-16A team recorded an excellent 2-0 away success.
Despite lots of spirit and effort from Monmouth, Millfield dominated the other fixtures and there were defeats for the under-16B (7-3), under-15A (4-1), under-15B (4-1), under-14A (4-0) and under-15B (5-0).
