Taking steps to support disadvantaged children

November 4th, 2018

Students in Monmouth have taken steps to support a locally-based charity working with disadvantaged children overseas.

Pupils at Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools have donated much-needed shoes for children in Africa.

Hands Around The World in Monmouth has been collecting shoes for secondary school-aged children in Zambia.

“If children in Zambia do not have shoes, they are unable to start school,” said Ngum, a Year 11 pupil and Charity Monitor at Monmouth School for Girls.

“We are very privileged to go to school in Monmouth because in some countries girls can’t go to school. It is our duty to make sure that girls in Africa have every opportunity to go to school.”

Mrs Jane Powell, Operations Manager at Hands Around The World, is a former pupil at Monmouth School for Girls and collected the donations.

Ngum added: “We hold charity events at school throughout the year because we believe it’s important to help people less fortunate than ourselves.

“We should always offer help when we can and we hope that our shoes will allow more young people to access education in Zambia.”
