Students sparkle in Songs for a New World production

Each night, ovations hailed Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools’ Songs for a New World production.
Talented Sixth Form vocalists Danny, Ffion, Sam and Lily delivered wonderful performances on Friday and Saturday at The Blake Theatre.
And the dance troupe, under the leadership of Ms Rhyan Parry, provided one of the many highlights with an eye-catching, The Steam Train, routine.
Songs for a New World is a challenging work of musical theatre written and composed by three-time Tony award winner Jason Robert Brown.
The show is an abstract musical, a series of songs all connected by a theme: “the moment of decision”.
Mr Simon Riordan, Director in Residence of Co-curricular Productions at Monmouth School for Girls, had promised a memorable show, and all four singers, with ages ranging between 16 and 18 years, did not disappoint as each showed remarkable talent, maturity, stage presence and vocal excellence in a technically demanding production.
With professional lighting and an outstanding band, led by the exceptional Musical Director Mr Derek Harris, Songs for a New World was a huge success and the broad range of musical genres, including pop, gospel and jazz, enthralled the audience throughout.
Director, Mr Riordan, said: “Sam, Lily Danny and Ffion should be so proud of what they’ve achieved. Songs for a New World is a big sing and a big ask, and each one of them went above and beyond. They’re professionals in waiting, and I can’t wait to see what they achieve next.”
