Harry, Henry, Oliver L, Gwyndaf, William and Lewys.

The speedy boys from Monmouth have clinched an impressive silver medal at the 42nd Welsh Schools’ Inter-Schools Cross-Country Championships in Brecon.

The team from Monmouth School for Boys finished runners-up in the Under-13 Boys’ Race at Wales’ biggest inter-school cross-country event of the year on Saturday 17th November.

On a beautiful winter’s afternoon in Mid Wales, Harry was the first athlete home for Monmouth in 10th spot, closely followed by Henry in 13th as only seven seconds separated sixth to 14th places.

Oliver L was Monmouth’s next runner home in 24th with Gwyndaf, the crucial fourth scorer, finishing 39th.

Team-mates Lewys (52nd) and William (55th) also ran good races for Monmouth’s Year 7 and Year 8 combined cross-country team in a field of 82 runners.

The Monmouth team totalled 86 points, putting them behind the winners, Bro Myrddin (62 points) from Carmarthen, who had four scorers between 11th and 19th places.

It was fantastic for Monmouth’s boys to round off the cross-country season with a silver medal and having achieved the best result since the school’s clean sweep of the four age-groups in last year’s County Championships.

The school’s Year 9 and 10 team were without a couple of crucial runners but also competed well to take fourth overall in their event.

Josh ran a fine race to finish 15th, while Joan had a very strong run in his maiden outing for the school to take 28th spot.

Gregor, in 46th, and James, in 55th, completed the scoring for Monmouth’s team with Kit and Oliver G also performing well in a very competitive field.
