Science team comes second in national final

January 26, 2018

Talented pupils from Monmouth School Boys’ Prep have today finished runners-up in the National Inter-school Science Quiz Championship for the second year in a row.

Srinivas captained the team in this afternoon’s showpiece at Oxford University’s Museum of National History, and was also involved in the final 12 months ago.

Ojas, Cameron, and Hugh were also in the Monmouth team who were outstanding and led for most of the final before finishing behind Downsend School from Leatherhead in Surrey.

It was a valiant effort from the Monmouth boys against 11 other prestigious schools from across the country, including The Manchester Grammar School and Bancroft’s Prep School.

Headteacher at Monmouth School Boys’ Prep, Mr Neil Shaw, said: “The high standards of all the pupils taking part was unbelievable.

“We are so proud, not only of our amazing team but also of the science teachers across the sector who have inspired and motivated all of the teams. I am thrilled that once again we have been placed at the very top of science knowledge in the country.”

The Monmouth team had worked so hard throughout the competition under the guidance of Dr Sion Wall, the science and technology teacher and co-ordinator at the school, and in their spare time.

Monmouth finished with a tally of 2,290 points – 185 more than the impressive tally they achieved in winning the Wales and South West Regional Final on home turf earlier this month.

However, Downsend School made a late rally to overhaul the long-time leaders, Monmouth, and secured the title with a remarkable 2,460 points.

Westminster Under School, who pipped Monmouth to the crown by just 35 points last year, finished in third position after scoring 2,170 points.

The annual science quiz competition is open to Years 5 and 6 in primary and preparatory schools across the UK and Monmouth won the South-West heat at Badminton last term.
