Sam and Lily relished stage return in Songs for a New World

March 25, 2022

Lily and Sam, both 18, were two of the four outstanding vocalists in Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools’ Songs for a New World production.
Three-time Tony award winner Jason Robert Brown wrote and composed the challenging work of musical theatre.
All four singers dazzled for two nights at The Blake Theatre under the direction of Mr Simon Riordan and Musical Director, Mr Derek Harris.
Lily, who joined in Sixth Form from Caerleon Comprehensive School, said: “I had lots of fun exploring the somewhat crazy characters that arose in my solo songs.
“I was forced to step outside my comfort zone and having the role really boosted my confidence.
“The last performance I did was two years ago in February 2020.
“Since the pandemic started, I have greatly missed performing, so to finally get to do a production has been fantastic.
“I loved getting to know the cast, sharing jokes in rehearsal and getting back on stage.”
Lily, from Year 13 added: “I will continue to work on my piano grades and I am aiming to achieve Grade 7 by the end of this year.
“I am taking my first dance exam next week and I plan to look into joining a local youth theatre group or a theatre group attached to the university that I go to next year.”
Sam said: “I absolutely loved my role in production. Our director and musical director were incredible at co-ordinating the whole effort and it was a pleasure to sing with my amazingly talented fellow cast members Ffion, Lily and Danny.
“To be back performing on stage was a gift that can never be taken for granted. It really was a breath of fresh air.”
Sam, from Year 12, added: “I hope that I get the chance to be part of another school production and I have no doubt that I will at some point down the line.
“I am very active outside of the theatre scene, so I plan to continue my singing and playing other instruments well into the future.
Songs for a New World was a joy to be a part of and I would do it all again in a heartbeat.”
