Our Nursery is exceptional and gives our children a seamless step into Reception where the foundations have been laid and positive relationships built.

Our children are taught by subject-specialists in Music, Dance, PE, Games and Forest School, and this gives them a personal and nurturing introduction to school life.

We provide a stimulating, vibrant and exciting curriculum, with a play-based approach combined with daily focused tasks in literacy and numeracy. Our children are challenged and encouraged to embrace every area of learning.

Our Nursery is teacher-led with a Forest school Teaching Assistant; our outdoor environment encourages children to be inquisitive, adventurous, challenged, and happy.  Whatever the weather, our girls and boys are outside exploring and learning about our world.

We share wonderfully exciting first moments with our Nursery families, encouraging parental engagement whenever we can.

Based in the beautiful Wye Valley, our children enjoy exciting trips and activities as we embrace the inspirational area and stimulate a love for learning.

At Monmouth Prep School, we are passionate about reading and give our children the fantastic opportunity to open doors to many different literary worlds.

We want all our children to become fluent, confident readers and we use the highly-acclaimed phonics and literacy programme called, Read Write Inc (RWI).

RWI is designed for children aged four to seven years old.  However, we first use it in Nursery and then our children in Reception access the taught programme.

The RWI programme helps our children learn to read fluently and at speed so we can focus on developing their comprehension, vocabulary and spelling. During RWI sessions, our children will read a book three times and, at each new reading, practise their comprehension skills.

We also use fun activities, for instance, to help our children remember whole sentences while focusing on spelling and punctuation; and to create their own sentences. Our children, of course, also complete longer pieces of independent writing in which they can demonstrate their creativity, spelling, grammar and punctuation.

We recognise the importance of our children being able to read from a young age.  We equip all our boys and girls with the tools they will need to become independent, life-long learners whilst, at the same time, encouraging them to develop a love of books at school and at home.

Music Pre-Prep

Beat, rhythm and pitch form the framework of our younger children’s musical activities, laying the foundations on which they can build skills and enjoyment.

We teach Nursery to Year 2 children based upon the Kodály method, named after the celebrated composer, and inspire them to develop a life-long love for music.

All our children learn through singing, action songs and games, through exploration of sound, body percussion and percussion instruments. We place the emphasis on a child’s singing; through a sense of pitch, playing instruments correctly and understanding beat and rhythm.

We introduce our boys and girls to a range of music from different cultures, genres and historical periods and, from Nursery upwards, encourage them to share their thoughts and ideas in class.

We teach our pupils songs in Welsh and French, while Year 1 and Year 2 children can begin to learn piano or violin; while children in Year 2 can join the popular Recorder Club.

We love showcasing our children’s musical talents on the big stage and our annual Christmas musical is always a special and joyous highlight for parents, pupils and staff.

Our children have further opportunities to shine in front of an audience in school assemblies, church services, St David’s Day and other celebrations.

Our pupils also take part in workshops delivered by visiting musicians that can include African drumming and Egyptian music.
