Budding bookworms dressed up as characters from their favourite stories and discovered new tales at the library to celebrate Literacy Week.

Children from Agincourt School and Nursery are celebrating their love of reading all week with various events, including a pop-up book café.

Tuesday saw the whole school transform into heroes of modern literature like Harry Potter and the whole cast of Julia Donaldson’s Room on the Broom.

Young ones from the Nursery headed to Monmouth Library in the morning.

Mrs Victoria Taylor, Agincourt’s Nursery Leader, said: “We thought it would be lovely if the children came to the library and started to explore different books, and hear them read by adults they’ve not met before.

“For many of them it’s their first trip to the library. This library is particularly beautiful and has a fantastic selection of children’s books.

“Many of the children are immersing themselves in books they haven’t seen before.

“We are nurturing their pre-reading skills: being able to see what the story is from the pictures, holding the books the right way around, learning to go from the beginning to the end.

“Yesterday we ran the book café and parents came in to share stories and cake with the children.”

Mrs Jennie Phillips, Headmistress of Agincourt, took on the guise of Hermione Granger for the day.

She said: “It’s vital to encourage children’s love of stories and reading from a young age.

“Reading helps spark their imaginations and teaches them anything is possible.

“It also develops general knowledge, open-mindedness and teaches them about right and wrong.

“This is the perfect way to bring the stories to life for them.”
