What age can my child join Monmouth Prep School?

Children may join the Nursery immediately following their 3rd birthday and then move to Reception in the September following their 4th birthday.

Do you participate in the Government-funded 30 hours’ free childcare?

We don’t currently participate, but we are working towards this scheme.

What are the minimum and maximum number of Nursery sessions possible?

Children may take a minimum of 4 half-day sessions and up to a maximum of 10 half-day sessions in the Nursery.

What are the normal school hours?
  • Pre-Prep, Agincourt, 8:30am to 3:40pm.
  • Prep, The Grange, 8:30am to 3:45pm.
What are the class sizes?

There are small class sizes; up to 16 in Nursery, up to 18 in Reception and currently two classes of 12 in Year 1 and Year 2. Years 3-6 classes are usually between 15-20. Usually two classes in Years 3 and 4 and three classes in Years 5 and 6. Largest classes (in Year 6) of 22.

When can my child arrive in the morning and is breakfast available?

Prep children (Years 3 to 6) may arrive from 7:30am and breakfast is available if required. Pre-Prep children may arrive from 8am for supervised care without breakfast.

What time can my child stay until at the end of the school day and is supper available?

At the end of the day, pupils can stay until 5:45pm at the Pre-Prep, Nursery to Year 2 and up until 6pm for those in Years 3-6.  After-school care is chargeable. There are two sessions; 3:45-5:15 and 5:15-6pm and the second session includes supper. We have a satellite after-care facility on our Senior Girls’ Campus from 3:45pm to 6pm for boys and girls who are using the facilities on that site or parents who find it convenient to collect from the Hereford Road side of town. This includes a hot supper with our junior boarders.

Are there after-school clubs?

There are a variety of after-school clubs, which vary slightly from term to term.  Parents are sent details each term and asked to sign-up their children.

At what age can my child board and is occasional boarding possible?

Boarding is available in Monnow House for the junior boarders from Year 3. Occasional boarding is possible, subject to availability and is chargeable.

Do the children have sports fixtures at the Prep School?

Those in Years 5 and 6 have sports fixtures either home or away.

What are the main school sports?
  • Boys: rugby, football and cricket.
  • Girls: hockey, netball and cricket.
  • Swimming for both boys and girls.
Is there Saturday morning school?

We do not have Saturday morning school or regular fixtures on a Saturday at Prep School level.

Can my child have individual music lessons and is LAMDA available?

Yes, there are a number of visiting music teachers – piano and violin are offered in Pre-Prep and Year 3 and other instruments and voice are offered in Years 4, 5 and 6. Tuition is available for pupils to prepare for LAMDA examinations.

Is there bus transport to and from Monmouth Prep School?

There is an extensive bus network from the surrounding area to the Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools and this is available from Year 2 upwards. A shuttle bus runs between Agincourt and The Grange in both morning and evening.  A shuttle coach operates between our Girls’ Senior School site on the Hereford Road and The Grange every morning and evening.

Are Bursaries and Scholarships available at the Prep School?

Awards are not available in the Prep School unless children are from a Forces family.

Children can apply for Scholarships before they enter Year 7 in the Senior School. These Scholarships are available for Academia, Music, Sport and Dance.
