Chess Success

June 17, 2014

Eight pupils from Agincourt enjoyed a great day of chess at the Wales Megafinal of the UK Chess Challenge in Cardiff on May 10th. Playing six games the target was to win at least four – to enable qualification for the British Gigafinal in Manchester in July 2014.

Taking on the best Welsh youngsters in their age group all the players from Agincourt performed well, with several of them being only 1 point or ½ a point short of going to the Gigafinal.

The Agincourt cohort included Jack, Harry, Henry, Elliot, Harry, Xanthe & Milo. Gabriel was our top scorer & has qualified for Manchester.

Teacher Mr.Thomas said today: “Agincourt continues to play a role as a training academy for Welsh Junior chess with several ex-pupils now in the Wales Junior Squad.

The UK Chess Challenge, meanwhile, with more than 75,000 entrants, is now the largest chess tournament in the world. Gabriel will be going to the Gigafinal where he will be competing against the best of British players, & I’m sure that we will see much more from the other seven in the coming years.”
