Children invade Raglan Castle and discover golden beans!

December 2, 2018

Eighty schoolchildren, many dressed as knights, enjoyed a free reign of a medieval castle for the day.

Monmouth Schools Pre-Prep and Nursery spent the day tackling exciting challenges at Raglan Castle and learning about what life was like 500 years ago.

The reception class discovered golden beans and almost came face-to-face with a giant!

Aged between three and seven-years-old, the children from Agincourt threw themselves into the exciting opportunity to bring history to life.

The older children handled rare artefacts and weapons had to imagine what they might have been used for.

To immerse them further in the topic, the children went back in time (through an arch) and became knights in training for the afternoon.

After a successful invasion, the children enjoyed historical workshops, pike drill, climbing up the towers and a picnic lunch.

Lessons have all tied in with the theme of Turrets and Tiaras since the beginning of term, so pupils arrived at Raglan already armed with historical knowledge.

Headmistress, Mrs Jennie Phillips, explained: “All of our creative curriculum topics are designed to inspire the children to think outside the box and be independent in their learning.

“Reception followed a series of clues from Jack’s mother (of beanstalk fame), nearly met a real giant and, to their huge excitement, discovered some golden beans.

“The day was a lovely experience for all of the children, and one which they are all still talking about.”

Meanwhile, Monmouth Schools Pre-Prep and Nursery is currently in the running for two prestigious national awards.

The school has been shortlisted for the Creativity award category in the 2019 Tes Independent School Awards.

It has also been shortlisted in the Best Independent Pre-Prep category in the Independent Schools of the Year 2018 awards run by Independent School Parent magazine.
