A creative writer has been crowned The Bard at Monmouth School for Girls’ Eisteddfod for the second year in a row.
Eighteen-year-old Eleanor was a deserved winner in the school’s annual celebration of Welsh culture last week.
Eleanor is believed to be the first pupil at the school to have won back-to-back Bard titles for her outstanding poetry.
Eleanor’s parents were invited to the ceremony and arrived just in time to see her honoured.
Violinist, Mererid, was a worthy winner of The Blue Riband Trophy for senior musicians across the school.
Both Eleanor and Mererid are members of Imbert Terry house which won a record seven trophies on their way to an overall competition triumph.
From wonderful singing and breath-taking dancing, to writing and debating, every girl shone during the hotly-anticipated Eisteddfod on Wednesday 6th March.
As tradition dictates, each house went head to head, competing for points in cooking, drama, and art competitions – among many more.
While Imbert Terry were the runaway winners in the house competition, Mather Jackson and Prosser finished joint second, followed by Bagnall Oakeley.
Acting Head, Mr Tom Arrand, said the standard of entries in this year’s Eisteddfod had been the highest in at least a decade.
“Pupils collaborated to compete in a wide range of competitions which tested their knowledge, understanding, skills and aptitudes and every department ran a competition,” he said.
“There was a reason why the competitions were such a high standard and that is because exceptionally talented and dedicated staff work all year round to develop the talents of the girls who compete.”
