January 14, 2015

Ten talented pupils from Monmouth School have been offered the life-changing opportunity to study at Oxford and Cambridge universities.

Hard work and dedication have paid off for 10 boys at Monmouth School and two girls from Haberdashers’ Monmouth School for Girls as they begin work towards securing the conditional offers from the world-renowned institutions.

The clever cohort have received offers to study subjects as varied as mathematics, modern and medieval languages, engineering and classics.

Jamie, Deputy Head Boy at Monmouth School, has been offered a place to study English at King’s College, Cambridge.

He said: “I’m absolutely delighted to receive the opportunity to study at Cambridge.

“I invested so much time and work into making my application the best that it could be, working long hours and trying to juggle all of my school commitments with the extra reading, but the staff at school have supported me all the way.

“It’s a good feeling to know that you have pushed yourself and achieved something which you didn’t always think you could do.

“I’m still slightly shocked that I got an offer – the interview process was really tough and I thought that I might not have made the cut, so I was really happy when I opened my letter.

“English is a very competitive course to apply for, so I feel very lucky to have been offered a place.”

Jamie must achieve an A* and two A grades in his A levels to secure his place.

He added: “Because we only get one shot at our exams now, I want to put as much work in as I can to ensure that I’m fully prepared, but I also want to make the most of my remaining time at Monmouth by getting involved with as many aspects of school life as I can, particularly in rowing, debating, and my commitments as Deputy Head of School.

“For a few years I have thought about applying to Oxbridge.

“I think what makes it so attractive is the unique style of undergraduate teaching there.

“You get taught by experts in such small groups, and this academic intensity and breadth of study would allow me explore a broad range of areas.”

Henrietta, Deputy Head Girl at HMSG, has been offered a place to study modern and medieval languages at Cambridge, and her schoolmate Lizzie has received an offer to read classics, also at Cambridge.

At the boys’ school, Oxford University has offered places to Tim, Tom, Matthew, Bryan, James, William, Ben and Seung Ju.

Dr Steven Connors, Headmaster of Monmouth School, said: “I am absolutely delighted with this year’s Oxford and Cambridge offers.

“Ten boys received offers for subjects as diverse and competitive as English, law, economics and engineering, making it a very special moment for the School at the end of our 400th Anniversary year.

“One pupil, Jordan, has been offered a place to study classics with an organ scholarship at Jesus College, Cambridge.

“I couldn’t be happier for him – what an incredible achievement.

“I would like to congratulate these talented and dedicated boys and thank the inspirational teachers at Monmouth School who helped them get closer to fulfilling their dreams.”
