Overmonnow’s footballers celebrate their tournament triumph with Mr Neil Shaw, Headteacher at Monmouth School Boys’ Prep.

Overmonnow Primary School clinched the top accolade in The Grange Invitation Six-a-Side Football Tournament.

Overmonnow’s A team played some excellent football and won the Cup after defeating Pentrepoeth Primary, Newport, 4-1, yesterday (Wednesday 23rd January).

It was the second time that Overmonnow have won the annual tournament, hosted by Monmouth School Boys’ Prep, in its 22nd edition and their first overall triumph since 2002.

Kymin View captured the Plate for the second time after a comprehensive 5-0 success against a spirited and enthusiastic Cross Ash in the final.

The hosts, Monmouth School Boys’ Prep, clinched two trophies.

The school’s A team won the Shield after a 4-1 success against Pentrepoeth Primary and the C team held their nerve against Overmonnow B in a penalty shoot-out to take the Bowl. The match had ended 1-1 after extra time.

The 12-team tournament, which took place on the new pitches at Monmouth School for Boys’ Sports Club, also included Osbaston Church in Wales School, who won the Cup competition last year.

Headteacher at Monmouth School Boys’ Prep, Mr Neil Shaw, who presented the medals and trophies, was very impressed with the high standard of football on show throughout and the outstanding levels of good behaviour and teamwork.

He thanked the organisers, referees, teachers, coaches and parents for their support and the Friends of The Grange School, who provided hot drinks on a cold but very enjoyable afternoon.
