The talented musicians from Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools will be performing in a gala concert at Wyastone Concert Hall in March.

Members of Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools Symphony Orchestra (HMSSO) have been working hard in workshops for the much-anticipated concert on Tuesday 27th March from 7.30pm, which promises to be an evening of exceptional music-making.

HMSSO is being led this year by Mrs Amy Clouter, Director of Music at Monmouth School for Girls.

The musicians enjoyed a hugely encouraging second workshop at St Catherine’s and Hamersley Hall on Sunday 28th January.

The workshop began with individual instrumental sections before the musicians joined together for a full orchestra rehearsal.

As always, the repertoire is challenging, and comprises Khachaturian’s Masquerade Waltz, Schubert’s ‘Unfinished’ Symphony No. 8 and Williams’s: Soundtrack Highlights.

Mrs Clouter said: “Each year, HMSSO provides an exciting opportunity for our more advanced musicians.

“We choose repertoire that provides musical challenge and broadens their experience of orchestral playing. Our team of tutors provide valuable guidance in both sectional and tutti rehearsals.”

As in previous years, 200 singers, including all for Form I and Year 7 from both Schools, will perform Kodály’s Missa Brevis in the same concert, conducted and directed by Mr David Lawson, Director of Music at Monmouth School for Boys. There will also be solos from a senior girl and a senior boy.

Tickets will be available after half term from reception at both schools.
