A popular music teacher is preparing to take the plunge next month for a fund-raising swim in an iconic stretch of water near Falmouth.

Mr Christopher Horner, who teaches violin, viola and piano at Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools, will be tackling his fifth Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) Castle 2 Castle Open Water Swim.

Mr Horner’s father was in the Navy and he is looking forward to donning his wet suit for the one-mile swim across the Carrick Roads between Pendennis and St Mawes Castles on Sunday 9th June.

“The RNLI do an absolutely fantastic job,” said Mr Horner, a keen swimmer since the age of 13.

“The charity is supported entirely through voluntary contributions and does not receive Government support.

“Events like the Castle 2 Castle Swim help to ensure the continuation of this very demanding work which carries more than its share of risks for its volunteer work-force.

“I can’t think of a better way to raise money for the RNLI, a voluntarily supported charity, very close to my family’s heart.”

Mr Horner has recently braved the waters at Barry Island and has previously completed the Castle 2 Castle challenge in 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016.

A keen member of the Cardiff Masters Swimming Club, Mr Horner said: “The RNLI does vital work apart from sea rescues and will continue to be active in the likely increase of flood rescue and relief operations.

“Please be assured that any contribution will be going to a very important cause.”

He added: “This year’s swim is already fully subscribed with its maximum of 450 swimmers.”
