Monmouth voted the happiest place to live in Wales and third in the entire UK

January 8, 2024

Our town has been named as the happiest place to live in Wales, and the third happiest place to live in the whole of the UK by Rightmove’s The Happy At Home Index.

Revealed in December, Rightmove asked 26,000 people to complete their survey to find the happiest places to live in the UK. The study found that feeling a sense of pride, belonging, and community is most likely to contribute to feeling happy to live in an area.

We are incredibly proud that our hometown has been named as such a happy place to be, and we, as a school based in the heart of the town, understand our strong responsibilities and position within this community.

Situated on the River Wye, our safe and bustling town is sandwiched between the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the enchanting Forest of Dean. The survey results showed that people who lived near a coast or river, with plenty of access to green spaces are more likely to be happy – so it’s no surprise why Monmouth came out on top.

However, our town doesn’t just offer shops, cafe’s, restaurants, theatres and beautiful outdoor spaces, it’s steeped in a rich history, much like our historic school.

Did you know that Monmouth Castle was the birthplace of Henry V in 1387? His statue stands prominently at the top of Monmouth Town, within the walls of the beautiful Shire Hall.

The town also benefits from great transport links with access to Cardiff, Bristol, Birmingham and Cheltenham all within an hour’s drive, and great access to the M4 and on to London. We have multiple train stations a short drive away and we are easily accessible from Cardiff, Bristol and Birmingham International Airports as well as Heathrow.

So, what does all this mean for our students and the school community?

  • Our students are motivated to learn with our inspirational backdrop of the Wye Valley and Forest of Dean. Our unique surroundings also inspire our school community to care for it’s beloved environment.
  • A breadth of local attractions, a busy town and great transport links mean evenings and weekends are full to the brim with a variety of activities for our boarding community and extra-curricular activities.
  • We are very easy to find and have great access to surrounding airports so our international boarders can come and go easily.
  • Our safe and small local town means our older boarders’ families can rest assured that free time to explore the town is safe as your child gains their independence, whilst still having plenty to do on their doorstep (age appropriate).
  • Our excellent transport links and school bus service means that pupils can join us from all over the UK without having to worry about complex and lengthy commutes.
  • Our school buildings are dotted throughout Monmouth town and within green space, so our pupils are always safe when at our school but have the freedom to explore in down time (age appropriate).
