Two Monmouth boys competed in the British Athletics Junior Road Mile Championships in London – and met England’s one-day cricket captain Eoin Morgan.

Monmouth School for Boys’ pupils Henry and Harry enjoyed running the Vitality Westminster Mile around St James’s Park.

The Under-13 boys’ race was just after the elite men, so they had the thrill of following in the footsteps of some of the leading middle distance runners in the UK.

And to further inspire them, Henry and Harry had a selfie before their race with Eoin Morgan who had completed the course in support of the Ruth Strauss Foundation and who will lead England in the Cricket World Cup, starting on Thursday.

The quality of the Under-13 boys’ field was very high with the winner completing the mile in 4:45.  However, both Monmouth boys finished in under 5:30 and within the top 30.

Harry came 23rd in 5:23, setting a new personal best, and Henry was 27th in 5:27.

The boys still have some work to do before they can catch up with Dr Huw Evans, Head of Mathematics at Monmouth School for Boys, who ran the mile in the Masters Championship, finishing in 4:50 and only four seconds off a podium place in his age category, coming sixth.

The next day Dr Evans went out again in the Vitality London 10k where he came even closer to a podium place with just three seconds between his fifth-placed finish and third spot.
