Nine talented pupils from Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools have been offered the life-changing opportunity to study at Oxford and Cambridge universities.

Hard work and dedication have paid off for six boys at Monmouth School and three girls from Haberdashers’ Monmouth School for Girls as they begin work towards securing the conditional offers from the world-renowned institutions.

The clever cohort have received offers to study subjects as varied as mathematics, engineering, computer science, architecture and chemistry. We asked the girls how they were feeling about the exciting news.

cindy1Cindy has an offer from Cambridge to study mathematics at Newnham College.

“Receiving an offer to study maths at Cambridge has been the best gift of 2017. For me, the offer is proof of my hard work over the past years and gives me an opportunity to pursue my dream of studying maths in the world’s leading institution.

I never thought about going to Cambridge before I came to HMSG two years ago. HMSG has provided me with the best opportunities, both academically and outside studies. Having studied in four different countries, I have found my teachers at HMSG the most inspirational – I can say for certain that I would never get an offer without their help. It is not only their teaching styles which helped me to gain the maximum knowledge during lessons, but they also offered me so much help during after school sessions. The Oxbridge talks at HMSG also reinforced my desire to go to Cambridge.

These talks showed me how great it could be to study at Cambridge and encouraged me to overcome my anxiety around applying to these top institutions. My goal now is simply working harder in the next few months to achieve the grades which I need to become a ‘mathmo’ at Cambridge.”

Katie1Kathryn has an offer from Oxford to read history at Exeter College.

“I’m thrilled to have been offered a place at Exeter College. History has been a passion of mine from a very young age, and to have been offered the opportunity to study the subject at Oxford is a dream come true. The interviews I completed were both very challenging, but the support from my teachers has been invaluable in preparing me for a process which is so notoriously unpredictable.

I’m very excited about the prospect of studying a course which will challenge me to develop my analytical thinking and broaden my knowledge of history, and I aim to work hard over the next few months to achieve the grades needed to fulfil the offer.”

gabby1Gabby has an offer from Oxford to study mechanical engineering at Lincoln College.

“I think it’s always important to follow your dreams, so I was keen to apply but somehow never expected to be opening an envelope with an offer of a place.

Oxford has a truly impressive engineering department and I’m delighted that I might one day be able to study there, and in such a beautiful, historic city. The offer has made me incredibly motivated to get the grades I need and I’m very grateful to know that my teachers are there to support me.

The application process was daunting, having to get to grips with the PAT as well as facing interviews at two different colleges, but the practice I received at HMSG and Monmouth School helped me understand and focus on what I needed to do.

I feel that being a rower at HMSG, with its disciplined training schedule and high aspirations, has helped me to succeed. It’s shown me that by working hard and aiming high, anything is possible.”
