Liam packs a punch for professional boxing debut

November 16, 2021

A former student at Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools is hoping to pack a punch in his debut fight as a professional boxer next month.

Liam O’Hare, who had more than 35 fights as an amateur boxer, will be making his professional bow as a Middleweight in Walsall, West Midlands, on Sunday 19th December.

Liam was a pupil at The Grange (now Monmouth Prep School) and a student at Monmouth School for Boys, leaving after Sixth Form in the summer of 2015.

Liam, who boarded in New House and Buchanan, where he enjoyed playing the League of Legends game, also spent a couple of terms at the Birmingham Royal Ballet (Elmhurst).

“I found that ballet wasn’t for me, but I still wanted to find a sport that I could put my mind to and burn off some energy,” said the Old Monmothian.

While studying at Monmouth, Liam joined Lydney Boxing Club at 16 years old and trained three times a week under the guidance of coach Brian Higgs, who remains his mentor.

His proudest moment as an amateur was reaching the semi-finals of the Under-21 National Championships.

Liam now lives and works in Hereford, is a member of The City of Hereford Boxing Academy and regularly spars in Birmingham and at the St Joseph’s club in Newport.

“I have been lucky enough to move to Hereford to continue my journey in boxing, which has been the pathway for me to keep focused and motivated and I struggled with growing up,” said Liam.

“My move to turn professional was taken over a year ago but it has been held back by the pandemic.”

Liam doesn’t yet know his opponent but he is raring to go and is looking forward to beginning his professional journey with his new Hereford-based trainer, Tony Chadwick.

“It’s going to be a massive evening in Walsall for my home show and I want to thank everyone who will be coming along to support me. I should be appearing fairly easily on the card.”

Liam’s debut will take place at Walsall Sports Hub in Littleton Street, Walsall, WS2 8ES. Doors open at 4pm, with the boxing action beginning at 5pm.

Tickets are priced at standard, £40, and ringside, £75.
