Japanese exchange trip broadens pupils’ horizons

Lucky pupils have just returned from an “eye-opening” trip to Japan, where they immersed themselves in the country’s culture.

Eleven teenagers from Monmouth School and Haberdashers’ Monmouth School for Girls, from Years 10 to 13, travelled to Osaka for the away leg of a three-week exchange programme.

Having welcomed the Japanese students to Monmouth earlier in the year, everyone was excited to meet once again.

Thanks to a fantastic itinerary planned by the hosts, pupils got the chance to deepen their understanding of Japanese life by taking lessons in Kendo, Judo, Buddhism, Zen and Origami.

Max, 15, is in Year 10 at Monmouth School.

He said: “Staying in Japan was incredible.

“Being able to experience life as a student and learn more about the culture was a complete eye-opener for me.

“The trip was better than anything I could have imagined and it was a priceless experience.

“If anybody is thinking of taking part in the exchange next time, I would very much advise them to do so.”

The visit encompassed a diverse array of trips, including a rare opportunity to watch sumo wrestling at Kansai University.

A poignant trip to Hiroshima provided a chance for some serious reflection, and had a deep impact on all of the pupils, who also spent a peaceful day in the secluded temple town of Mount Koya.

HMSG student Samantha, 15, said: “My favourite activity was making my own Ukiyoe print (traditional Japanese woodblock printing) at the Kamigata Ukiyoe Museum.”

Pupils found it difficult to say goodbye to their new friends at the airport, with many vowing to return to Japan in the future.
