Governors

The Board of Governors plays an important strategic role and is responsible for establishing the aims and overall conduct of the Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools. It determines the overall strategy for the schools with the Principal, and reviews and approves the implementation of the individual strategies, policies and procedures developed by the Principal and the Executive team to shape the best possible education for present and future pupils. It has responsibility for ensuring the proper control of the schools’ finances and compliance with relevant regulation, particularly the safeguarding of pupils.

The Governors give their time voluntarily, receiving no payment and for continuity are generally expected to serve at least four years on the Board. They offer a blend of skills and experience to help guide and direct the schools. The criteria for the appointment of the Board of up to 21 governors are laid down by the Trust Deed of William Jones’s Schools Foundation and comprise:  present or past members of the academic staff of leading universities; a representative from Monmouthshire County Council; members of the Haberdashers’ Company; and individuals with a special knowledge of Monmouth through residence, occupation or employment, some of whom may also be former pupils, current or past parents.

Potential governors are generally recommended by the Haberdashers’ Company and by existing Board members. The Board normally includes governors with experience in education, business, law, accountancy, public health or the medical profession and property. When selecting replacement governors, the aim is to retain this balance of professional expertise.

The Governors operate across the Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools but divide responsibility for key areas into committees covering the individual schools, academic matters, finance, audit and estates, pastoral care, remuneration and governance. The schools each have a Nominated Governor who plays a valuable supporting role for the respective Head. Nominated Safeguarding Governors have been appointed for each school; they work closely with the Designated Senior Persons (DSPs) in each school to oversee the fulfilment of the Board’s safeguarding responsibilities.

The Board Chair is a senior Haberdasher appointed by the Trustees who hold overall responsibility for the governance of the schools.

The Governors can be contacted through the Clerk to the Governors: stansfield.clare@habsmonmouth.org.
