February 7, 2023

About 700 people attended a wonderful memorial service last week for inspirational Old Monmothian, Eddie Butler, the former Wales rugby captain and broadcaster.
The popular commentator and former pupil at Monmouth School for Boys died in his sleep in September 2022, aged 65, while taking part in a charity trek in Peru.
Headmaster at Monmouth School for Boys, Mr Simon Dorman, and former Development Director, Mrs Clare Anning, were among the guests at Abergavenny Market.
Broadcasters Sonja McLaughlan and Clare Balding and former rugby players Jeremy Guscott, Jonathan Davies and Brian Moore were also among those present, who paid tribute to Eddie.
Eddie rose to prominence with his rugby at Monmouth School for Boys and then the club side, Pontypool.
He played for Wales 16 times between 1980 and 1984. He was called up to the British and Irish Lions squad that toured New Zealand in 1983.
