HMSG United FC makes history

December 2, 2014

Football at Haberdashers’ Monmouth School for Girls made history this weekend with pupils from Years 7 and 8 taking part in a football tournament at King’s College Taunton.

A team of 10 pupils, supported by senior football mentors Izzy and Rhi travelled to Somerset to take part in a mini football tournament. This is the first time competitive football has been played by HMSG pupils. Football has been offered at HMSG for over three years, each Friday, 4.15-5.30pm, coached by Mr Meek, Mr McCluskey and Mr Edwards. Each week 20 enthusiastic pupils from Years 7-12 participate, improving their skills and general fitness.

On Saturday the team were slightly nervous but also very excited. Four games of 8 minutes were played with the girls improving with every match. The outcome was 2 losses and 2 wins; the final game had a convincing 3-0 score line to HMSG.

A great deal of fun was had by all, further games for junior and senior teams are planned for 2015. A big thank you goes to Mr McCluskey for driving the minibus.
