An experienced History teacher at Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools has delivered a fascinating talk on the Italian Renaissance.
Mr Philip Vaughan-Smith, from the History Department at Monmouth School for Boys, spoke to a meeting of The University of the Third Age at Bridges Centre in town.
The popular teacher talked to a packed and appreciative audience, including a number of former colleagues, about the cultural brew of patrons, writers and artists in Florence in the 14th and 15th centuries.
He drew out parallels with modern society and illustrated Renaissance life with colourful stories of the main players, including a plot to murder the Medicis, and the Borgias’ abuse of the Papacy.
