Henry’s superb hat-trick fired Monmouth School for Boys to a thrilling 3-2 win at Malvern College in an action-packed South-West Independent Schools League clash.
Monmouth appeared to be cruising towards victory after opening up a 2-0 lead, but Malvern hit back to level the match before Henry snatched the points from the penalty spot.
Monmouth made a barnstorming start to last Saturday’s match and sailed into a two-goal advantage inside 30 minutes.
Henry showed his tremendous ability in front of goal with two excellent strikes after fine work from Tom and William had provided him with the opportunities.
However, Malvern fought their way back into the contest and reduced the deficit after a lapse in concentration in Monmouth’s defence.
Malvern started the second half quickly and drew level after a sloppy pass was seized upon by a home striker, who made no mistake from close-range.
As the match progressed, it became very competitive but Monmouth kept their composure and were awarded a crucial penalty, which Henry dispatched with confidence.
Monmouth held on and were delighted with their first league win. The boys showed great grit and determination, particularly after surrendering a two-goal cushion away from home.
Monmouth will be aiming to continue their unbeaten run when they travel to Marlborough College for their third SWIS League fixture on Saturday 19th March.
Meanwhile, the under-16A’s roared to a 6-0 home win against Malvern and the under-15B’s triumphed 7-0, while the under-15A team slipped to a 2-1 defeat.
The under-14A team’s first game for the school ended in a 2-2 draw, while the under-14B’s cruised to a 7-1 victory. However, the school’s second team crashed to a 5-0 defeat and the third team suffered a 3-1 home loss.
