Harry surges to bronze at Pembrey

December 6, 2017

In-form Harry D snapped up a bronze medal as four athletes from Monmouth School Boys’ Prep made their debuts in the Gwent Cross-Country League.

Debutant Matthew, from Prep II, finished an impressive 30th in the third race of the series at Pembrey Country Park near Llanelli.

Seven of the school’s 10 athletes came inside the top 50, which was another outstanding achievement by the boys in the 102-strong field of starters.

Brothers Harry and Tom G became the first siblings in different years at the school to compete in the same Gwent League race.

The Monmouth School Boys’ Prep A team finished fourth, while the B team were 11th and the C team, 27th.

Harry D, who won the East Wales Under 11 Boys’ title at Brecon last month, continued his impressive season with third place in the Novice Boys’ race.

He clocked 5:47 – just nine seconds behind the winner.

Harry is third overall in the individual standings for the series.

Seb was the second Monmouth athlete home, in 6:18 to finish 18th, followed by John (6:28) in 27th and then Matthew (6:29).

Tom C (6:33) was 37th, making an impressive 20-place improvement on his last outing.

Debutant Cameron (6:37) was 44th and Harry G (6:46) crossed the line in 47th to improve his race position by a remarkable 21 places from last time out.

Another debutant, Feargus (7:00), finished 61st, while Frankie (7:02), who was 62nd, and debutant Tom G (8:30), who was 91st, also represented the school with pride.

The penultimate Gwent League race of the series takes place at Pontypool Park on 11th February 2018 and draws to a close at Blaise Castle in Bristol on 3rd March.
