Strathclyde Park in Glasgow buzzed with excitement on the 27th of July as it hosted the thrilling Home International Rowing Regatta (HIRR). This prestigious event, which combines intense individual and team competitions, saw top athletes from across the UK battle it out for the coveted junior, senior and overall points trophies.
Habs Monmouth rowing proudly had six boys and two girls selected to represent Wales in this highly competitive regatta. Notably, the two girls chosen had recently excelled at the GB J16 trials, where they were placed second in the time trial and third in the final standings. Although only the winning crews are selected to race against France, these results are a significant achievement. As J16 athletes, these girls have the potential to represent Wales at the HIRR for the next two years.
All eight Habs Monmouth rowers participated in at least two events, competing in both smaller boats and the highly anticipated eights. The boys showcased their versatility and endurance, racing in the pair, coxed four, coxless four, and the eight. The girls teamed up to compete in the coxless four and the eight.
The boys’ coxless four delivered an impressive second place finish, and they followed this up with a hard-fought third place in the eight. Our girls also put in stellar performances, securing third place in both of their events—a fantastic achievement!
In the overall standings, the Welsh junior team proudly claimed third place, edging out Scotland and finishing just a few points shy of Ireland. England, as expected, showcased their formidable strength to take the overall trophy. However, this year’s results mark a significant improvement for Wales, and with an enhanced selection and training process in place, the future looks incredibly bright.
A huge congratulations to all the Habs Monmouth rowers who competed—you’ve done us all proud! Your dedication, passion, and exceptional results are a true testament to the spirit of Habs Monmouth Rowing.
