Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools Swimming
Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools Swimming is for girls and boys from reception through to Sixth Form.
Teaching and coaching takes place at both Monmouth School for Girls and Monmouth School for Boys. Both pools are 6 lane, 25m, with diving blocks. The swimming programme works in conjunction with that offered through the curriculum and extra-curricular swimming sessions are available to all pupils.
Haberdashers’ Monmouth School Swimming sessions take place all year round, during term time. Swimming Club looks at developing water confidence, stroke technique and basic competitive skills. Swim Squad is a programme designed to enhance competitive skills such a starts, turns, finishes and relay swimming. Work is done in refining stroke techniques in all four strokes and specific swim fitness is promoted.

Monmouth Pre-Prep School
Pre-Prep Swimming Club takes place once a week and is available to pupils from reception through to year 2. The lessons are tailored around water confidence, water skills and basic stroke technique.
Monmouth Prep School
All pupils have the opportunity to sign up to Prep Swimming Club, which takes place once a week. Sessions are split into years 3+4 and years 5+6. These sessions are available to all swimming abilities and help build water confidence and develop technique in all four strokes. Pupils are also given the opportunity to learn some of the basic skills required for competitive swimming.
Prep Swim Squad is aimed at those pupils wishing to pursue competitive swimming. A total of four sessions are available per week and they seek to enhance specific swimming fitness, stroke technique, starts, turns, finishes and relay swimming.
Monmouth School for Girls and Monmouth School for Boys
Senior Swimming Club is open to all abilities and includes a variety of stroke development, water skills and drills, fitness work, personal survival and lifesaving. This takes place once a week.
Senior Swim Squad looks at enhancing competitive swimming skills. There are five sessions available per week and the sessions are tailored to developing speed, anaerobic and aerobic endurance, refining starts, turns, finishes and relays and preparing pupils for a variety of competitions.
There are no entry requirements to attend any Swimming Club.
To attend any Swim Squad, pupils must be able to complete 400m continuously and have a minimum of three recognisable strokes, one of which must be breaststroke.
Meet the coaching team
Ian Ridyard: Prep Swimming Club, Prep Swim Squad, Senior Swim Squad
Ian Ridyard is an ASA Level 2 Swimming Coach and was Head Coach of Preston Swimming Club for five years. He has coached three National Age Group winners, took Preston Club to National Micro League Finals (ages 9,10,11,12) and regional Speedo League finals. An ex-swimmer himself, he was British Junior 100m and 200m butterfly and 400m and 1500m Freestyle Champion. He captained England Youth Swimming Team and represented GB and NI Schools at the World Schools Games.
Tom Haffield: Pre-Prep Swimming Club, Prep Swim Squad
Tom Haffield is an ASA level 2 teacher and coach. He is a former international swimmer who represented Great Britain at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and Wales at three Commonwealth Games. He has held Commonwealth, British and Welsh records and now teaches and coaches swimming to all ages.
Jackie Cameron: Pre-Prep Swimming Club, Prep Swim Squad, Senior Swimming Club
Jackie Cameron is an ASA level 2 swimming teacher and level 1 coach. Her love for swimming started when she swam for the Army. She has coached with Monnow Swimming Club for 10 years. She played an integral role in igniting her daughter’s passion for the sport and has helped at galas as a time keeper.
Debbie Walker: Senior Swimming Club
Debbie Walker is an ASA level swimming teacher and has always enjoyed recreational swimming. When her children were small, she took them to adult and babies lessons then swimming lessons. As they progressed in the sport and joined Monnow Swimming Club, Debbie volunteered as a coach. She now works at Monmouth Leisure Centre as a swimming teacher and has completed her adult, babies and pre-school qualification.
Nicola Baber: Prep Swimming Club
Nicola is an ASA level 2 Swimming Teacher and has taught swimming for the past 5 years at Monmouth School Sports Club. She has worked with a range of abilities, both in group lessons and on a one-to-one basis. She is additionally a fully qualified lifeguard.
Anna Matthews: Prep Swimming Club
Dan Richards: Prep Swimming Club
Dan Richards is a level 2 ASA Swimming Teacher and has been teaching swimming since 2004. He has taught Prep School Swimming since 2005 and has regularly led group lessons. Dan has additionally taught one-to-one lessons at Monmouth School Sports Club, but now focuses his time on local primary schools and Monmouth Prep School whilst holding his position as Assistant Manager.
Angela Whitehead: Prep Swimming Club
Angela Whitehead is a level 1 ASA swimming teacher and has additionally taught BTEC Sport level 1 to 3. She has taught groups lessons at the Prep School and at Monmouth School Sports Club and has experience in teaching pupils one-to-one.
All sessions take place during the school term and exact dates will be communicated directly.
